They have such a wonderful selection of rock, plants, koi, goldfish and much more. Definitely consider driving to Moore and checking them out."

Building Your Own Pond or Water Feature

Building your own pond or water feature can be a very rewarding and creative project, but it’s important to understand the work involved to ensure success. Proper planning, the right tools, and a clear understanding of each step are key to avoiding costly mistakes.  Building a pond isn't rocket science but it can definitely be labor intensive and there are some specifics you'll need to know and understand. Here are some essential considerations to keep in mind:

1. Planning and Design

Choose the Location: Select a spot with adequate sunlight for aquatic plants but not so much that it encourages excessive algae growth. Avoid areas with overhanging trees that could drop debris into the water.

Decide on the Type of Feature: Are you building a koi pond, garden pond, or a pondless waterfall? Each has unique requirements for size, depth, and components.

Measure and Outline: Plan the dimensions of your pond, ensuring it fits well within your landscape and meets the needs of any fish or plants you want to include.

2. Digging Or Excavation and Setup

Excavating the Pond: Digging the pond to the correct depth and shape is labor-intensive. Most ponds should include a deeper section for fish and shallow areas for plants.  Depending on what you are planning your pond could be 1 to 3 feet deep or have a combination of depths for different sections.

Install the Liner: Use a durable pond liner to protect against leaks. Smooth out wrinkles to create a clean foundation for your pond.

3. Adding Filtration and Circulation

Install the Pump and Filter: A quality filtration system is essential to keep water clean and healthy. Be sure the pump is correctly sized for the volume of your pond.

Include Waterfalls or Fountains: These features add beauty while increasing oxygen levels in the water, benefiting fish and plants.

4. Incorporating Aquatic Plants and Fish

Choose Appropriate Plants: Include a mix of floating, submerged, and marginal plants to enhance aesthetics and balance the ecosystem.

Introduce Fish Carefully: Gradually acclimate fish to their new environment to reduce stress. Avoid overcrowding, as this can strain the pond’s filtration system.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Underestimating Maintenance Needs: Regular cleaning, water testing, and plant care are essential for a thriving pond.

Skipping the Planning Stage: Poorly planned ponds often result in design flaws or inadequate filtration systems.

Ignoring Safety: Ensure safe access to the pond and secure electrical connections for pumps and lights.

Building your own pond is a fulfilling endeavor, but having the right resources and guidance is an important part of a successful project.
